- 国平刀匠は、本名を河内道雄といい、十四代河内守国助の次男として昭和16年大阪に生まれる。関西大学法学部在学中に考古学者末永雅雄氏に師事し、卒業後人間国宝宮入昭平に入門し相州伝を学び、独立後は高松宮賞を始め数々の特賞を受賞、独立から12年目には備前伝を修得するため人間国宝隅谷正峯に入門する。昭和62年にはその備前伝の作刀が文化庁長官賞を受賞、同年無鑑査に認定される。平成7年には「大和伝」を修得し、平成17年、奈良県無形文化財保持者となる。平成26年には乱れ映りの再現に完全に成功し正宗賞を受賞。
この刀は、身幅3.4cmもある豪壮な平造の寸延び短刀で、つんだ小板目肌に、地沸が微塵につき、明るく冴える美しい地鉄に、互の目に、棟焼き・飛び焼き頻りに掛り、華やかな皆焼となり、足・葉頻りに入り、小沸深くつき、金筋・砂流し掛るなど刃中の働き盛んで、匂口明るく冴える最高傑作である。Swordsmith Kunihira—whose real name is Kawachi Michio—was born in Osaka in 1941 as the second son of the 14th-generation KawachinoKami Kunisuke.
While studying law at Kansai University, he apprenticed under the archaeologist Suenaga Masao . After graduating, he became a pupil of NingenKokuhou(Living National Treasure) Miyairi Akihira to study the Sosyu tradition. Following his debut as an independent smith, he won numerous prestigious awards, including the Takamatsunomiya Prize; twelve years into his independent career, he apprenticed under NingenKokuhou (Living National Treasure) Sumitani Masamine to master the Bizen tradition.
In 1987, a sword he crafted in the Bizen tradition won the Commissioner for Bunkacho Choukansyou(Cultural Affairs Award), and that same year, he was certified as an artist of "Mukansa" (non-judged) status. In 1995, he mastered the "Yamato-den" (Yamato tradition) of sword making, and in 2005, he was designated a Holder of Mukeibunkazai Hojisya (Intangible Cultural Property) by Nara Prefecture. In 2014, he successfully recreated the *Midare-Utsuri* (irregularly patterned temper-line reflection) and was awarded the Masamune Prize.
